Maps
is a science-fiction tale of epic proportions by japanese manga artist
Yuichi Hasegawa. Spanning 17 novels and turned into a 4 part anime
series, Maps gives the reader a rich universe full of strong characters
and evil villians, fantastic space craft and technology presented
by a story that Asimov would admire.
Started in 1989, the manga
was completed with issue #17 in 1995. Seven years trailing the exploits
of the two central characters, Gen and Ripumira, and a host of engaging
companions and foes. In 1994 a four part anime was started which introduced
the main characters and plot ending with a long road to be travelled
ahead.
The most distinguishing
feature of Maps that differentiates it from other manga is its strong
feel of 'classical' science fiction, an Asimov like quality typified
by Ripumira's stylish futuristic garments and the ship that is a part
of. The Angelic Ghost Ships, one of the stories central devices, are
the most stunning spaceships, surpasing the designs of more well known
series and movies in imagination and visual impact.
About the characters, they
are larger than life, a trait of manga, either in prowess or comedy.
The Villians are truly wicked, caring not for the fate of worlds,
yet some are saved and redeemed from absolution - while a cliche -
perfectly done. The Hero's are confident, throwing themselves into
the battle against evil with little regard for their own safety, but
with a true sense of loyalty for their companions, always saving them
from trouble and being there.
Thus there are relationships,
serious and humourous, between the principle characters, villians
and those inbetween. They spice up the story being told, providing
a humanity amongst the carnage wrought by the interstellar war tha
rages.
The universe that exists
is a tapestry of variety. Many alien races are introduced and pulled
into the story as the threat of the Mystic Ones sees them join in
forces, rallying around the Hero Gen, forgetting their differences
and providing an example for the Nations of this world of what Unity
can achieve.
With these grande praises,
let yourself be taken in by this engaging tale of Heros, Villians,
danger, suspense, love, comedy and humanity.
